At Smiggle, we believe in making the world a better place for our children and the generations to come, and we’re committed to doing our part to help build a sustainable future for everyone.
We know that sustainable and ethical operations drive positive change – not just for our customers or our own teams, but also for the international suppliers we work with, and their teams.
As part of The Just Group, we align to international standards of ethical sourcing to make sure we manufacture our products responsibly. This includes assessing, addressing and respecting the human rights of all workers in our supply chain. Everyone has the right to work and live in freedom from exploitative practices. And as our supply chain evolves, we make sure we adapt our governance practices to meet new challenges and any changing conditions.
Smiggle is dedicated to continuous improvement and stays connected to our teams, suppliers, government and non-government bodies to effectively identify and address risks of unethical practices. All of our commitments are underpinned by our goal to make meaningful and lasting change for the next generation.
We are committed to the highest standards of ethical and responsible sourcing and product testing.
Smiggle is dedicated to creating innovative and re-useable products, such as our strong and durable drink bottles, food containers, lunch boxes and backpacks. These products are designed to meet the ‘kid-test’ for wear and tear, and for repeat use each and every school day.
- Providing technical expertise and thorough safety assessments of our products to ensure no harm comes to our customers through their use
- Following and adhering to International Toy Safety Guidelines
- Staying up to date on new regulations and developments globally
We recognise the social and environmental impacts that our purchasing decisions have, respect our customers’ needs to understand where our products are made, and strive to share how our products are sourced responsibly and ethically.
Policies are only one part of our work in safeguarding human rights in our supply chain – but policies alone cannot sufficiently mitigate the risks vulnerable workers may face in the countries we source our products from.
Our Ethical Sourcing Program has a range of measures and procedures to support existing international human rights standards and local laws in the jurisdictions in which we operate.
Our sourcing model and policies enable us to make responsible sourcing decisions and ensure that risks are identified, managed and mitigated within our framework. This includes:
Actions & Due Diligence – Sourcing Responsibly and Ethically
Annual 3rd party audits for all factories - Elevate Responsible Sourcing Assessments or other approved audit types.
Remediation & Corrective Action Plan Management - To close out any issues in audits.
Anonymous Worker Sentiment Surveys - To understand the experience of workers.
In addition, we’re a supporter brand member of the Association of Professional Social Compliance Auditors. This increases the professionalism, consistency and credibility of the people and organisations that conduct social compliance audits in the countries we source from.
Our work provides us with data driven insights into our factory partners. With transparency and integrity being key principles of our program, we continue to develop the necessary capacity building and remediation programs to address any issues that are identified.
Just Group Policies
The Supplier Ethical Code of Conduct has been written using the key human rights principles from International Labour Organization (ILO) core standards and The United Nation’s Guiding Principles on Human Rights (UNGPs). All suppliers must sign our supply Terms and Conditions, of which the Code of Conduct is part, prior to any orders being placed. The Code of Conduct is reviewed annually to ensure we are proactively addressing human rights issues or legislative changes that need to be updated in our policies.
Living Wage
A Living Wage will provide workers with compensation for a regular working week that meets their basic needs as well as a level of discretionary income. In addition to compliance to local laws, we strongly encourage all suppliers they work with to pay workers a living wage. Our full position on Living Wage with our work to date and future milestones can be read here.
Modern Slavery Statement
We have a zero tolerance to modern slavery in all its forms. We recognise our responsibility in helping to reduce the incidence of modern slavery. Smiggle is part of Premier Investments Limited (ASX:PMV), and our Modern Slavery Statements further outline our Ethical Sourcing program and actions to address Modern Slavery in the supply chain. You can read our Modern Slavery statements on the Premier Investments website here.
We strive to create a great place to work that is safe, inclusive and has the best talent to connect with current and emerging customer needs.
Our robust platform for preventing and eliminating discrimination, bullying, harassment, vilification and victimisation ensures appropriate standards of behaviour and conduct in everything we do. In addition, we pride ourselves on our commitment to diversity within our teams.
We support industry and government initiatives to ensure our valued team members are treated with respect. No one should be exposed to an unsafe work environment.
We have a dedicated Ethical Sourcing team who lead the delivery, development and improvement of our ethical and sustainability programs. Our team also conducts training at all levels of our organisation and our factory partners.
In addition to our team members based in Melbourne, Smiggle has Quality & Compliance inspectors based in China who work directly with each of our factory partners and support elements of the Ethical Sourcing program where required.
Through continued collaboration with community partnerships, we believe it’s important to have a positive impact where we work and live.
In addition to our work with our international partners, we are also committed to continuous improvement in our stores, to ensure our customers and team members have great experiences.
Initiatives we have implemented include:
A commitment to reducing the use of non-recyclable vinyl decals in our window and merchandising displays by 90% and moving to fully recyclable paper-based signage
Supporting anti-bullying charities in Australia and the United Kingdom, to raise funds for anti-bullying programs in primary and secondary schools. Learn more here
